Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Tax Staff Accountant with expertise in State and Local Tax (SALT) to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in tax compliance, research, and planning, coupled with a client-focused mindset and excellent technical skills.

 

Hours:

This position works 2080 hours each year. During our busy season, January through mid-April, our tax staff work an average of 57 hours per week. Outside of tax season our team works a 3-4 day work week, with our offices being closed on Fridays.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Completion of tax returns and other accounting related tasks as assigned by the Department Supervisor.
  2. Compute taxes owed and prepare tax returns according to approved procedures, ensuring compliance with payment, reporting and other tax requirements.
  3. Provide ongoing client support, as directed by the Department Supervisor, by systematically gathering information, adjusting journal entries, keeping records, examining reports, answering questions and providing ongoing technical assistance.
  4. Log services provided so records are consistently accurate, updated and available.
  5. Conduct tax research and stay current on state and local tax regulations to provide accurate guidance.
  6. Identify and address client-specific SALT issues, including nexus determinations, apportionment analysis, and compliance obligations.
  7. Develop, lead, and train tax staff on state and local tax regulations.
  8. Assist in state tax audits, including documentation preparation, responses to information requests, and audit resolution strategies.
  9. Collaborate with the tax team to develop innovative solutions to complex SALT challenges.
  10. Maintain strong client relationships and effectively communicate tax issues and strategies.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA or EA certification required.
  2. 4+ years of public accounting experience.
  3. 2+ years with a focus on state and local taxation research and compliance.
  4. Proficiency in tax software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  5. Strong understanding of multistate tax concepts, including nexus, apportionment, and tax credits.
  6. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  7. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex tax issues to clients.
